![]() ![]() This presentation offers another viewpoint of “discrepancies” between the life and work of al-Ghazali by referring to the writings of her contemporary, Muhammad al-Ghazali (1917–1996). Other scholars interpreted it as al-Ghazali’s “strategy” to accomplish her feminist agenda she silently manifested herself as an exemplar peer for Muslim women through her actions, because if she had advocated unconventional roles for women in Muslim society, she would not have gained the position she did in conservative religious circles. Some scholars call this behavior hypocrisy it is hypocritical because she advocated Muslim women to confine themselves to domestic roles while she herself enjoyed other roles. In her writings, al-Ghazali repeatedly emphasized the importance of women’s domestic roles as wives and mothers while she herself actively participated in Da’wa, or social activities, to advocate the righteous path for Muslims at the expense of her own domestic duties. She was a well-known Egyptian Islamist, a leader of the Muslim Ladies’ Association, and a leading figure in the Muslim Brotherhood. Zainab al-Ghazali (1917–2005) is one of the most controversial Muslim figures among feminist scholars because of the “discrepancies” between her life and work. ![]()
